Xerox's Star workstation was the first commercial implementation of the graphical user interface. The Star was introduced in 1981 and was the inspiration for the Mac and all the other GUIs that followed.

    Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Just picked up a Atrix 4G and on my way checked out the iPhone 4 - it looks decidedly antique and bland in front of the competition

If you're going to judge "looks," the Atrix looks (and feels) like cheap junk next to the iPhone. Just like practically every other Android phone on the market. The iPhone looks like a Rolex sitting next to the Casio of the Android offerings.

    Enjoy the plastic. ;)

That's what I was think but decided, if that's his taste live and let live.

Perhaps this is like CCTV systems in the workplace.

You are allowed by law to fit them, however staff must be told they are there.

Perhaps it's just that the public need to be made away this is being done, and not done secretly. If people knew, then this would be a non story in the 1st place.

For what it's worth, Alienware's top-of-the-line ALX series desktops (actually, all of their desktops, I believe) have the power supply at the top, too. I know some will scoff but they are lauded for their gaming performance and they brag about their cooling technology.

    http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/accessibility.html

    From this site:

    Closed captioning
QuickTime currently supports closed captioning by including a text track alongside audio and video content. But improved QuickTime support will automatically display the CEA-608 closed captioning text standard in analog broadcasts in the U.S.

    -----

Anyone think this means support for Closed Captioning in iTunes video downloads? As a hearing-impaired Mac-User, the lack of subtitles/captions in the TV shows is the one thing keeping me from buying a bunch of them. I hope they address this issue soon...

I am not hearing impaired, but I often watch TV and movies with the closed captioning on. I cannot really say what about it makes it more enjoyable to me--no one has ever understood why I do it, maybe it has to do with how I process information (I do have trouble listening in lecture classes, maybe a learning disability etc.), but my point is to say that I am also interested in getting closed captioning on iTunes shows.

I wrote to Apple on the feedback part of their web-site about this. I was wondering if you might know better what the law is about closed captioning. I always assumed it was required for network television shows. Is it not for network shows that appear online?

Anyhow, it's functionality I would definitely like to see.

To be fair, every smartphone on the market is an iPhone clone and every tablet an iPad clone, so it is all related to Apple in that way.

Well, there was this now extinct company called Palm. That once a long long time ago had the Palm TX, and full sized 4" touch screen PDA that had everything but the CDMA/GMS chip to make phone calls.

Then there was the Palm Treo which dated back to 2002 with technology the iPhone still doesn't have

Then there are OG (ol' skool) nerd/geeks like myself that emailed and blogged and badgered Palm to merge the two together.

Apple just beat them to the market. The iPhone is essential a conglomeration of many devices and concepts.

The true and ONLY breakthrough that Apple brought was the OS to manage all of that technology.

Everyone needs to take a step back and think a bit deeper on these things if we wish the conversations to ever go anywhere.

Lol if apple was a religion it would have more extremists than Islam, Judaism, and Christianity combined!

Pssstt... I think it already is a religion to many.

When someone speaks about "smartphone marketshare" he usually means world wide and not only for Botswana. But nice try.

You mean when someone says Marketshare they mean that other place outside of the center of the universe America?

    Sorry, completely forgot about that.

iOS rocks in apps, but it does suck *** in terms of notifications and true multitasking.

iOS doesn't suck in terms of true multitasking because it doesn't use "true" multitasking. iOS excels at using a form of multitasking that is appropriate for the hardware it is running on.

Here's the official release notice from Sony.

    http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/11/12/gran-turismo-5-release-date-confirmed-for-november-24th-2010/

as well as the car list and the track list.

    http://www.gran-turismo.com/local/jp/data1/products/gt5/courselist_en.html

I'm disappointed the Bugatti Veyron is standard only, and not surprised there's no Porsches, since I believe the license to use Porsches are exclusive to EA, no other game from any company really has them. But, I am hoping that GT5 will be released on the 24th, for real this time, instead of being pushed back for the 40,000,001st time.

Today was a great day for Gran Turismo news. The Mazda 3 (Axela) I drive in real life is on the game, and the tracks look nice.

Well it's back to the future for all of us. Remember when the Mac was going 64-bit with the introduction of the G5 PowerMac on June 23, 2003? Only more thanthree years later and we're doing it all over again thanks to Yonah's 7 month retrograde.

Just so long as Steve doesn't say we'll be at 3 GHz in a year.

Just think of it like this, how hard would it be to fraud this? NObama's administration could whip one up in an hour the most.

While I personally don't doubt NObama is born in Hawaii, I doubt this will matter for one bit.

And the Apple haters do yet another 180...

    1. Macs

1995 to 2007: Don't use a Mac. Noone uses Macs.
2007 to Present: Don't use a Mac. Everyone uses a Mac.

    2. Apps

1995 to 2/22/2011: Don't use Apple. There is no software and they can't do anything.
2/22 to Present: Apps? Who needs Apps as long as you have a robust UI?

    3. Open

2007 to Today: Apple is a walled garden that only stupid lemmings use.
Today going forward: Controlling the OS is necessary and good for the consumer.

Exactly! I've heard every single one of those arguments, except instead of a lemming ... I'm an iSheep!

And for those of you that add "customizing/theming" as a great feature to Android, please take a look at what your peers are proud of. http://fuglyandroid.tumblr.com/

A government in power is responding against a rebellion.

If a rebellion sprang up in the United States, our government would respond with force as well.

"Slaughtering his own people" sounds a little propogandish to me. Are you saying that Qaddafi is taking people who have no connection to the rebellion at all and slaughtering them?

How can any government meet armed internal rebellion without qualifying as "slaughtering their own people"?

As others have pointed out, killing a peaceful protester (or non-involved innocent civilian for that matter) is never justified.

I also wanted to add... go onto UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP (http://new.umusic.com/flash.aspx) and see how many groups you would be missing if ITUNES didn't offer Universal.

If you need "98 DEGREES" on your iPOD, then you better start freaking out...

Otherwise, don't sweat it. Universal has nothing to threaten Apple with. No worries here.

I went there, made it thru the "D"s and came up with these artists in my digital collection:
    Aaron Neville
    Al Jarreau
    BB King
    Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
    Blues Traveller
    Bob Marley and the Wailers
    Cardigans
    Counting Crows
    Cowboy Mouth
    Cranberries
    David Benoit
    Def Leppard
    Del Amitri

    There's a boat-load more there, yes they're a BIG label.

Oh, then I can take the Honeycomb source code and do whatever I want with it?

Oh, wait, I can't? Then how doesn't this make Android 'closed source'?

At least with Gingerbread (2.3), the source code wasn't available until it was officially released (on android.git.kernel.org). A few days after the release of Gingerbread, I could see the gingerbread branch.

Honeycomb is still not released as far as I know. When it's released and the code is not available, then we can talk.

Until then, it like a G5 powerbook :-D

I hope that number keeps rising; we need competition to not let Apple rest on it's laurels.

As someone who likes his Apple products, part of me laughs seeing numbers like this for the Xoom, but the other part thinks the same thing you post above--that Apple needs to have a successful competitor in the space to keep Apple's progress from stagnating. More competition will make them take bigger steps more quickly.

This is like watching two officers argue about who gets to lower the lifeboats while the Titanic is sinking.

More like arguing about where the dessert forks and soup spoons go in the place settings. I don't think lifeboats have even entered into the conversation.

The question is what will Google do when they do publish the source code? All of these people pointing and laughing didn't read the article.

no, the question is: "Is this evil?" when google starts rejecting Facebook Android phones, or android versions using Bing and not Google...

    thats the question.

WHat is he deal with no new displays, but they did drop the prices a little. I think the iPod is long overdue at this point for a makeover. I guess I'm just a victim of my own unfulfilled expectations.

The displays WERE updated slightly...check the main page.

As for iPods...why "makeover" what is working? And this was the DEVELOPERS conference. iPods, if they happen before Christmas, will be either at Paris or a special media event (the latter more likely, IMHO).
